Hungarian Study Visa

1/10/2025

The Complete Guide to the Hungarian Study Visa for International Students. One of the most important steps after receiving your acceptance letter from a Hungarian university is securing your Type D study visa. For many students, especially those from the UAE, Middle East, and Asia, the visa process can feel complicated. This guide will walk you through the requirements, steps, and tips to ensure a smooth journey from your home country to Hungary.
1. What Is the Hungarian Type D Study Visa? The Type D long-term visa is issued to students who plan to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days to pursue higher education. This visa allows you to enter Hungary, after which you will apply for a residence permit that covers the entire duration of your studies.
2. When Should You Apply? You should apply immediately after receiving your university acceptance letter.
  • Processing time is usually 4–8 weeks, but it can vary.
  • Since classes start in September or January, you should apply at least 2–3 months before your program begins.
  • Delays in visa processing may prevent you from starting on time, so applying early is crucial.
3. Where Do You Apply? Students apply at the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate responsible for their country of residence.
  • In the UAE: through VFS Global centers in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
  • In Lebanon, Jordan, India, and other countries: at the respective Hungarian embassies or consulates.
4. Documents Required: Here’s the standard checklist most students must prepare (requirements may vary slightly by country):
  • Visa application form (completed and signed)
  • Valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months after your intended stay)
  • University acceptance letter (official, stamped and signed)
  • Proof of tuition fee payment (first installment or full amount as required)
  • Proof of accommodation in Hungary (dormitory contract or private rental agreement)
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (bank statements, sponsorship letter, or affidavit of support)
  • Medical/travel insurance (valid for the Schengen area, minimum coverage €30,000)
  • Flight reservation (sometimes requested, not always mandatory)
  • Visa fee receipt (to be paid at submission)
5. Health Insurance RequirementSchengen rules require that students have minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical expenses and repatriation.
  • Insurance must cover the entire Schengen zone, not just Hungary.
  • In the UAE, one-month Schengen travel insurance for students typically costs AED 200–400, depending on age and insurer.
  • After arrival, students often switch to a Hungarian student health insurance plan for the academic year.
6. What Happens After Arrival in Hungary?Once you arrive with your visa:
  1. You must apply for a residence permit at the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (Immigration Office).
  2. You will receive a residence permit card that confirms your legal stay for the duration of your studies.
  3. This card must be renewed annually, usually by submitting proof of continued enrollment, accommodation, and financial means.
