Semmelweis University–A World Class Institution with a History of More than 250 years

Semmelweis is a multi-campus university. The medical departments and the University Clinics occupy a huge area on the Pest side of the Hungarian capital.
With a quarter of a million of books, the Semmelweis University has one of the biggest and best furnished medical biological collections in Hungary, and among the Hungarian universities Semmelweis produces the greatest number of publications. The university is deeply involved in the patient care of the Great-Budapest region. Out of its 3000 clinical beds 75% takes part in the regional medical care and some special outpatients' departments also supply the teaching hospitals with patients needed by the training.
Semmelweis was the first Hungarian university, which started to offer international courses at the Faculty of Medicine in German in 1983. The English programs started four years later, in 1987. Nowadays, the university enrolls more than 1200 new international students each year.

International Recognition of the Degree

EU
In those professions where the conditions of education in Hungary are identical with those in other EU member states, and these have already been recognized, the member states of the European Union are obliged to accept the diplomas issued in Hungary, independent of the language of tuition. For EU citizens it gives an automatic license.

India
Doctor of Dentistry degree of Semmelweis University is equivalent to B.D.S. degree in India.

USA
Semmelweis graduates (as foreign graduates) have the right to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), after which they are eligible for residency.

Canada
Semmelweis graduates are eligible to pass the Medical Council of Canada Evaluation Examination (MCCEE) and the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) before applying for residencies.

Application Criteria

Completion of high school/senior secondary school
Be at least 18 years of age by the end of the calendar year of application
Strong background and interest in natural sciences (particularly in biology and chemistry)
Good command of English
Strong motivation to study and practice medicine & dentistry or pharmacy

Admission is based on a Successful Entrance Examination

1-Multiple choice test in Biology, Chemistry, English and Medical English.

2-A subsequent interview aims to reveal the applicant's professional attitude and skills, and it includes an oral examination focused on the applicant's knowledge in Biology, Chemistry and English.

Entrance Exam Details

Tuition Fees/Year 2025-2026

Dates of the entrance examinations are announced through SEMAPHORE and can be seen after submission of the application(s). Exam opportunities are regularly updated and expanded according to demand and capacity.

The exam consists of two parts, written and oral.
1. The written part includes multiple choice tests in Biology (20 questions), Chemistry (20 questions), General English (40 questions) and Medical English (20 questions).
The duration of the exam is 2,5 hours.
2. The oral part is an interview with a university professor about medicine related questions and motivation.
